GOETHE LIEDER COMPOSED BY HIS CONTEMPORARIES

September 28, 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Music accompanied Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) throughout his life. He grew up surrounded by music. Goethe’s post as the director of the Weimar Court Theatre brought him into professional contact with numerous musicians, and traveling virtuosos from across Europe were regular guests in his house situated on Frauenplan – including Maria Szymanowska and Clara Wieck.

The performers intention in this program is to immerse listeners in the rich musical environment in which Goethe lived, allowing them to share this diversity and introducing them to the works of his contemporaries. Each of these composers had a personal relationship with Goethe (with the exception of Mozart) and a number of them created their songs in close collaboration with the poet. Original fortepianos and their copies are perfect for the lied settings composed by Goethe’s contemporaries. In the utilisation of historical fortepianos, Fanie Antonelou und Sofya Gandilyan are attempting to recreate a similar tone as could be heard around the time of Goethe and his contemporaries.

Lieder composed by: Carl Friedrich Zelter, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Ludwig van Beethoven και Maria Szymanowska.

Fanie Antonelou, soprano
Sofya Gandilyan, fortepiano
