Rethinking Monteverdi
With this concert, we honor the people who, through their work, have taken care of a perpetual companionship. We sing Monteverdi’s music, as we murmur it walking down the street, as we whistle it down the stairs, and we want to be – in this demanding carelessness – faithful.
“Rethinking Monteverdi” is a question. A well-understood problem with no given solution.
“L’ alba novella”: the necessary hope for continuity. The poetry that Monteverdi dealt with, the poetry of Torquato Tasso, Luigi Groto, and Giovanni Guarini, concerns us just as much as music and plays an important role in the choice of the pieces. Words that we like but often make us uncomfortable, such as “the mistake that tightens my meninges and the intangible terror of the cedars as they tremble by the jolt of the night”. But music, like honey, dissolves the sharpness and makes the medicine bearable.
Monteverdi was a charismatic man, a pole of attraction that is difficult to stay away from, and it is always a pleasure to dedicate our time to these people.
